If you knew me personally, you'll know I'm someone who do not like shopping. I don't have a lot of clothes either, I tend to wear them over and over again. While I do enjoy moments of retail therapy, I do not derive constant joy out of it. So whenever I do go shopping, I try my best of buy the most versatile pieces and as many pieces I need in one setting, regardless of whether the item is on sale or not.
Furthermore, I really do not enjoy seeing an already cluttered wardrobe on top of the new set of clothes I just bought. Thus I decided to work on a one in one out system for my clothes.
Here are reasons why I am able to do this exercise with ease:
- My wardrobe palette is extremely neutral - white, black, denim blue, hay, beige and yellow
- I wear my clothes so often it can get quite obvious that they are worn
- I like wearing similar pieces of clothes that fit me
Here was how I did it:
- Create a list of clothes that I like or want to buy - I'm really just creating a mental note though it's always better to write it down.
- Shop for the clothes and make sure I purchase only if I feel 100% great in them, otherwise I wouldn't think twice about buying it at all.
- Do a one-to-one exchange within my wardrobe
- I take out clothes that are of similar colour and type (eg. pants, dress, top)
- I ensure it is a piece I either wore too often and has worn out or will probably never wear again
- I replace these worn out/obsolete clothes with the new clothes I bought
I personally feel that it's so much easier to have a reason to be shopping and in this manner of a one-to-one substitute, I don't feel difficult to part with a piece of clothing because I know I have a similar piece to look out for in the event I need or want to wear that old piece of clothing.
