Declutter: WFH Edition Reduce Reuse & Recycle at Home

To be frank, I'm no environmentalist nor environmentally cautious per say. However having so much additional clutter from disposables at home has made me think a little bit harder about the choices I'm making when I buy - in particular - food items. These disposables really add up at home and ultimately, the environment.

Thus, I thought why not create a win-win solution here I can both declutter the things in my house and allow myself to use less plastic and disposables altogether.

Personally, I'm starting off by taking small steps in easy quick solutions. Here are three quick fixes I did; I arranged them in the most cliche (but also very useful!) manner by using the 3-R approach - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Here it is.

-

Reduce

  1. The easiest quick fix on reducing your personal waste is really this: have a reusable water bottle with you. It not only saves the environment but also saves you the trouble and money to buy a beverage all the time.
  2. My advice is to get a bottle you like a lot, not just because it's affordable. Get something that will last you for a long period of time.

Reuse

  1. Lately I've been pretty obsessed with peanut butter - like it's my new found guilty pleasure. Furthermore, working from home has made peanut butter a little bit of staple at home resulting in having a number of empty jars.
  2. Now I repurpose them to become jars for different types of nuts.
  3. To ensure the jars look aesthetically pleasing: obtain simple looking jars and be consistent about the type of brand you use
  4. It's a win-win, you save the environment by ensuring you put these jars into maximum use!

Recycle

Amount of material use for da pao (take away) lunch vs having a reusable lunch box
  1. I never thought much about takeaway disposable boxes and utensils until recently when I opened one of my kitchen drawers. It was full of disposable utensils kept for "future use". Of course, they forlorn and forgotten in the drawer - never put to use.
  2. Furthermore and unfortunately, these plastic containers and utensils are typically not recyclable, especially when contaminated with food (see here
  3. I'm removing this clutter altogether and checking out what I am able to recycle. I hoping to avoid using disposables altogether in future.
(Before and After!)

This mini project of mine has been extremely therapeutic for me. If you are bored or have nothing to do at home, I totally recommend you to do it - it'll make your space around the house so much more conducive.

Have fun !
