We always talk about spring cleaning, creating ambitious goals and somehow things never seem to fall through - we either drag ourselves to do the things we want to do to achieve our goals or give up altogether. But sometimes it's the small steps that compound to something bigger and that's habits.
One way to declutter your mind with overwhelming ambitious goals is not to think of it at all but to think of what small steps are sustainable.
I created a habit tracker for myself in the mid of January (which is why you'll see that my crosses only start out halfway into the month) to experiment if the system worked and it worked even more flawlessly than I've imagine. while I took some trial and error to get something I could break down and also fit something I would deem visually satisfying, it did help me to stick to a certain momentum on a daily basis.
Here's how I did it and what worked for me:
- don't make it perfect - do some trial and error on what works best for you
- make the habits you want to internalise so damn simple you don't even think twice of doing
- break the habit tracker in small cells to cross out in a monthly planner format to keep track of days and dates
- take a look at your journal at the end of the day to cross these simple tasks out - it's extremely satisfying
Few things you can note from my habit tracker:
- it's obviously not perfect and I am alright with that
- I was attempting to do gratitude page but completely failed
- there are some habits I failed and some days I did not attempt a habit (no crosses) but that's okay
- the process got me to tweak things I can do better for the next month
